On October 10, Roots Co., Ltd. announced "YADOKLIP" (Yadokari, meaning hermit crab), the first product from its desk-focused brand "DESKIP." Reservations opened the same day on the official online shop, and it goes on sale on Tuesday, October 20.
A hermit crab clip that holds a plate in its claw
YADOKLIP is a desktop item for displaying messages and the like on your desk. A plate is held in the hermit crab's claw, and it sits on a work desk or study desk.
During development, the team studied the viewing angle and stability when a plate is held. They went through repeated 3D model revisions and prototypes, adjusting the structure, such as increasing the base's contact area. The hermit crab body and the plate were developed together with funovo Co., Ltd. of Hakodate.
Made from nylon recycled from discarded fishing nets and more
The material is nylon recycled from discarded fishing nets and other sources. It brings the know-how from Roots' fishing net upcycling business in Hakodate into a product used on the desk.
The name DESKIP comes from DESK, SHIP and SKIPPER, meaning a ship's captain. The brand likens an adult's work desk or a child's study desk to a ship that each person sails on their own.
With this series, the aim is to use a small item seen on the desk every day as a way to spark interest in the sea and the background of the materials. Besides the character shape, another feature is that it works as a tool for displaying information.
